SWOPS is built as a service-oriented architecture that handles data, business logic, and user interfaces.

Database: SWOPS uses the DB2 Universal Database version 8, running on a standard desktop PC (2.4 GHz, 1GB RAM) with a Windows 2000 Server or other operating systems.
Application Logic: The application runs in a WebSphere Application Server (WAS) 5.1, on the same or a similar PC as the database.
Linear Programming Solver: A Linear Programming Integer Solver carries out optimization tasks. The solver, which runs in a Windows environment, typically runs on the same PC that hosts the database (not obligatory).
User Interface: SWOPS provides a Web-based, portal-based (JSR 168) user interface, so it can be accessed by any authorized user from anywhere in the world. A thin client built with Macromedia Flash™ is automatically fetched and opened in a browser. Additionally, there is a rich client built for administrators, using MS-ACCESS and interfacing directly with the DB2 database.
